The Office Christmas Party

Can be found in the Category: Personal Perspective, The Office - 19 Nov 2007

It’s just around the corner - the party you either love or dread. Not all companies have a Christmas party; however, for those of you who have not received your invitation, it is coming - ready or not.

I do not know the exact statistics, but I would venture to say that more people dread going to the Office Christmas party. If you are in sales, your parties tend to be the best. You guys bring in the big bucks and your managers want to treat you right. You get the open bar, jazz band buffet at the top of the Marriott in San Francisco.

Many of you get what you would expect for an unbudgeted event - back of a restaurant, mediocre food, a DJ who thinks he is funny, and cheap wine.

Spouses particularly hate going to these yearly events. They don’t know anyone, get tired of office talk that inevitably creeps into the conversation. They wonder how in the world their spouse works with these people.

Several suggestions concerning the Office Christmas party this year.

1. If you do not want to go, don’t.
2. Don’t drag your spouse if he or she really doesn’t want to come.
3. Leave early if you hate it - stay to the end if you are having a great time.
4. Don’t get drunk. You don’t want to be the talk of the office the next day, not to mention that you can’t drive home.
