Who Will Make the Coffee?
I recently saw a sign above the coffee canisters in an office breakroom that read:
“If You Draw the Last Cup from the Urn, Be a Grown-up and Start Another Pot.”
Over the years I have seen all sorts of threats taped to the office coffee maker.
“Don’t you know how to make coffee, moron?”
“Don’t drink it if you are not going to make it.”
“Your Mom does not work here, so make coffee please.”
This one didn’t bother me at first pass; however, the word “urn” struck me as odd. I had an image of ashes, instead of coffee. Call me illiterate, my wife does.
So I read it again and the phrase “be a grown-up” jumped out at me. I didn’t like it. It did not send the right message. Yes, all of us have emptied the urn and walked away from time to time. I do not think that makes us a child.
There is nothing about the message that will make people want to comply. I am sure others will be offended, if only subconsciously.
Have a great weekend.
