Boss Day - What To Do? What Do I Buy? What Do I Say?

It is time for my annual post about the national holiday known as “Boss Day.” Truth be told, most American workers do not know much about this elusive holiday. Most bosses do not receive cards, or gifts.

So why do we celebrate Boss Day?

I have been asking that question ever since I started this boss forum.

If you read my other boss post (just type in “boss day” in the search box), you will see that I have maintained a rather cynical view on National Boss day. It is not much different than Secretary’s Day, or Father’s day for that matter.

My philosophy is that we should let our fathers know that we appreciate them all year long, not just once a year. We should show our appreciation to secretaries throughout the year, not on the one day when the spotlight is focused on one of the most “underappreciated” employees in your department.

It gets a little trickier with bosses. If you do not like your boss, you may feel obligated to send him a card or a gift during the boss holiday. Why? You don’t like him because you do not think he is effective usually. Why celebrate his ineffective leadership?

On the other hand, if you love your boss and you truly want to show an extra measure of appreciation for all that he has done for you, buy him a great cabernet with a little card that tells him he is appreciated.

This boss (me) always appreciates a good bottle of wine. I’ll send you my paypal address if the spirit moves you.

Have a great Boss day whether you are celebrating or not!
